The intersection Menzinger-Amalienbrugstraße is a very dangerous intersection for cyclists in northwestern direction with a high risk of accidents.
Coming from the pedestrian/bicycle path between the Botanical Garden and Nymphenburg Park in a northerly direction, if you want to enter Menzinger Straße, you first ride on the sidewalk (wrong side of the street, but permitted) to the pedestrian lights as shown in purple in the picture and cross Amalienburgstraße there. On the wrong side of the road, cyclists then continue or dangerously cross Menzinger Straße to get to the right side of the road.
I drive here daily from Dachau to Munich over this crossing in both directions and see with the homeward journey in the direction of northwest not only me but also many other cyclists in the clamp again on the correct road side to come.
The crossing probably planned by the authorities over four traffic lights (see red line in the picture) will probably reject each cyclist as one sees in reality.
An optimal crossing from my point of view would be drawn in green in the picture. This requires an additional traffic light on both lanes of Menzinger Straße (green box in the picture) and a breakthrough of the green strip at this point.
Please find attached also two photos, which you can also observe yourself every afternoon (home time) at every traffic light at this point.
Since this way is also a school home way and many pupils use the dangerous variants I ask you to make this crossing safer for cyclists.
AI ideas (AI-generated, non-binding)
- Install temporary bollards or cones to create a protected bike lane on the sidewalk leading up to the pedestrian lights, guiding cyclists to cross safely. Add signage directing cyclists to use this designated lane. This would be a low-cost solution that can be implemented quickly while a more permanent plan is developed.
- The high-risk intersection Menzinger-Amalienbrugstraße requires an additional traffic light for cyclists to cross Menzinger Straße safely. This would involve a breakthrough of the green strip and an additional traffic light on both lanes of Menzinger Straße. Examples of similar solutions can be found in cities like Copenhagen and Amsterdam.
- A possible "moonshot" solution would be to implement a bike-sharing program in the area, offering alternative routes and bike lanes. Additionally, a community engagement program could be developed to educate and raise awareness of the dangers of the current intersection and the benefits of alternative transportation, such as biking or walking. This approach could also create a more social and interactive atmosphere, promoting a healthier lifestyle and reducing traffic congestion
- As a citizen, you can contact your local transportation department and express your concerns regarding the dangerous intersection for cyclists. You can also suggest a potential solution such as the optimal crossing proposed by the urban planning consultant. It is important to advocate for safer infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists in your community.
- The mobility officer should consider the proposal to create an additional traffic light on both lanes of Menzinger Strasse and a breakthrough of the green strip, as suggested by the user. This will create a safer crossing for cyclists, especially for students who use this way.
